India Rebukes U.S. and EU Over Russia Trade Amid Trump Tariff Threats
India has sharply criticized the U.S. and European Union for their continued trade with Russia, even as President TRUMP threatens to impose steeper tariffs on New Delhi. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs defended its energy imports from Moscow, citing diverted traditional supplies to Europe post-Ukraine war. India's trade with Russia surged to a record $68.7 billion in the 12 months to March 2025, while EU-Russia trade reached 67.5 billion euros last year.
The ministry revealed Washington had previously praised India's oil trade strategy for stabilizing global energy markets. Meanwhile, EU-Russia trade dynamics show a 74% drop from 2021 levels, though Moscow still exports key commodities like machinery and chemicals to the bloc. Pre-pandemic India-Russia trade stood at just $10.1 billion, underscoring the dramatic recent growth.
